Mining on ANNE is different from Proof of Work or Proof of Stake. It uses hard drive space rather than electricity or locked coins. The one-time plotting is computationally intensive, but ongoing mining only reads from disk and computes deadlines at low cost. Mining probability is proportional to committed storage.

The protocol has mechanisms to prevent concentration. A handicap rule adds a penalty if the same miner wins too often. Every fifth block is reserved for solo miners only. The share tier distributes rewards across seven participants every block even when a larger miner wins the solo portion. Limits are imposed on storage allocations per miner per tier.
